Andrew Sama, MD, FACEP

President, Progressive Emergency Physicians

Dr. Sama serves as the founding President of Progressive Emergency Physicians. Prior to serving as the President of Progressive, Dr. Sama was primarily affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. He initiated the Department of Emergency Medicine at North Shore University Hospital and assisted in the creation of the North Shore Long Island Jewish Emergency Medicine Service Line in which Dr. Sama led over 300 physicians, fellows, and residents throughout 16 locations. During his tenure with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, Dr. Sama was the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the North Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Group.

Dr. Sama has been a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) for more than 25 years. In October 2007, he was elected to the Board of Directors of National ACEP, and re-elected in 2010. He served as the Secretary-Treasurer of ACEP from 2009-2010, Vice President from 2010-2011, President-elect from 2011-2012, President from 2012-2013 and Chairman of the Board from 2013-2014. Currently, Dr. Sama and his fellow leaders of Progressive have assembled a team of highly talented physicians and mid-level providers to provide Progressive’s patients with the highest quality and excellence in emergency medicine.

Christopher Raio, MD, MBA

Chief Medical Officer, Progressive Emergency Physicians

Dr. Raio currently serves as the Chief of Emergency Medicine for Catholic Health Services of Long Island and Chairperson of Emergency Medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with honors at the University of Florida and graduated from the Howard University College of Medicine in 2000. He later finished his Emergency Medicine residency training as chief resident at North Shore University Hospital in 2003 and pursued emergency ultrasound fellowship training the following year. Dr. Raio received his MBA in Health Services Management with Distinction from Hofstra University in 2012. Prior to joining Progressive Emergency Physicians, Dr. Raio served as Vice Chairman of Emergency Medicine at the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York. He has extensive experience in Emergency Department operations and Observation Medicine, having also served as the Medical Director of North Shore’s Clinical Decision Unit. Dr. Raio is well-published and has held several academic appointments including Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at The Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the New York Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

John Mathew, DO, FACOEP

Chairman of Emergency Medicine at St. Joseph Hospital

Dr. Mathew currently serves as the Chairman of the Emergency Department of St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage, New York. He earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his Internship and Residency in Emergency Medicine at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. Prior to serving as the Chairman at St. Joseph Hospital, Dr. Mathew served as the Associate Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at the Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center from 2010 through 2012 and as the Associate Director of Emergency Medicine at Franklin Hospital.
