The pandemic has taught us the critical nature of the relationship between ED staffing ratios and ED volume as hospital ED volumes plummeted 42% in 2020. Lower ED volumes combined with higher acuity patients means making sure efficiencies don’t outpace quality of care .
St. Francis Hospital experienced a significant decrease in Emergency Department patient volume commensurate with the prevalence of COVID in 2019, to see that volume increase beyond pre-COVID baseline, and subsequently explode as of January 2021.
Mercy Medical Center was one of the last PEP NY sites to see it’s volume impacted by COVID-19, holding pre-COVID volumes until March. From March to April, the site experienced a 30% decrease in ED volume, and remained there through January 2021.
